Relangi Venkata Ramaiah knew with his surname “RELANGI” was an Indian Film Character Actor,comedian, and producer known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He was born on 9th August 1910, at Ravulapalem E.G.Dist of Andhra Pradesh and died 26th November 1975 at Tadepalligudem.
MISSAMMA movie produced by Vijaya Productions in 1955, directed by L.V.Prasad. Starred N.T.Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Savitri, and Relangi. Relangi played a role by name Devaiah a” CON ARTIST” & Beggar. He sings a song “Dharmam Cheyandi Babu” and “Seetaram Seetaram” while begging, both the songs sang by Relangi himself Seetharam Seetharam song was a big satire on society. N.T.Rama Rao (N.T.R) and Mery (Savitri) who pretended to be a married couple to get the jobs of school teachers. N.T.R.warns Devaiah to stop begging otherwise Government is going to implement anti beggar act. Feared Devaiah decides to accompany Rao for his survival unwillingly, who was habituated to easy money.
Gopalam (S.V.R) Zamindar, runs a school in their elder daughters name whom they lost 16 years back at a Pushkarms of Kakinada. A.K.Raju( Akkineni) is the nephew of Gopalam, an amateur detective who is on the job of searching the lost child. A.K. Raju tries to know the personal details of Mary through Devaiah, he starts demanding for TAILAM (money) to reveal the details. Having noticed the curiosity of A.K.Raju he starts swindling Tailam from him. The Tailam word became very popular in those days. As and when he comes to know the information about Mary, Devaiah demands Tailam, poor Raju forced to lose money every time. Sometimes Devaiah demands Tailam from N.T.R also, when he was in need of him. He never opens his mouth without Tailam. Even he used to demand Tailam from the younger daughter of Gopalam and Raju when they got a tassel to decide who is nice among Rao and Mery, he will empty the wallets of both. In the mainstream and out of the stream he maintained his mark of comedy throughout the movie.
Relangi started his career by playing a jester (Vidushak) role in a movie Srikrishna Tulabharam in 1935, under the direction of C.Pullaiah.
As a comedic actor, he was quite popular when he partnered with actress Girija and Suryakantham. Writer Mullapudi Ramana named them as” RELNGIRIJA”.
He was honored with the PADMA SHRI for his for his contribution to Indian Cinema in 1970.
