An actress doesn’t need any introduction. A moon among the stars. She is none other than MAHANATI SAVITRI Born on 6th December 1933, Tadepalli, Guntur District. Savitri played a role as MADHURAVANI in the movie KANYASULKAM 1955.
Madhuravani is a full-blooded vital character and is the victim of the hypocritical patriarchy a nautch girl, a kept woman, she handles all men, who come in contact with, she efficiently and judiciously. A character having many shades. A multi-talented Savitri played this role successfully.
Madhuravani (Savitri) the muse of Girisham(N.T.R) during the beginning of the movie and that of Ramappa Panthulu (C.S.R) in the rest of the movie, is portrayed as very righteous wise and magnanimous woman. Madhuravani may be a prostitute but when Savitri is enacting the role you have no other choice than to admire her. She helps to rescue a girl child from marrying an old man, brings in and see the change in that old man who donates half of his property to the cause of widow remarriage and nails down the opportunistic Girisham to marry a young widow Buchamma. Savitri excelled throughout and especially in the scene in which she laughs at the word LOTTI PITTA LU read out from a letter by C.S.R.The laugh soon turns into a long heckle chuckle at him. It was one of the best laughter scenes in the world cinema.
Savitri received several awards, including the Rashtrapati Award, Nandi Award, and the Kalaimamani.
She was noted at the 30th International Film Festival of India.
The Government of India issued a postage stamp in commemoration of Savitri.
